Keeping Your Plants Alive

It’s no secret that I love me some plants. I get really excited about plant shopping, taking care of my plants, and most importantly, naming them. Over time, I’ve learned how to best care for them as well as propagate them.

If you want your plants to live beyond one week, it’s important that you check the requirements they have for water and sunshine. Just like humans, plants have different structural makeups, and therefore, different needs.

Succulents in particular can tolerate quite a bit of sunshine and do not need water as regularly. This makes them a great plant friend to have in sunny California.

If you notice your plants starting to brown a bit, that can indicate either too much water or too little sun. In some cases, it can also mean too much sun, especially if your succulent is younger, it is more sensitive to temperature changes and it actually needs a bit more water than a grown plant. You can see below that I have plants of different sizes. The fuzzy one on the right started from 2” tall and eventually grew to about 5” tall. If you want your plants to grow bigger and potentially propagate, then you need to replant them in a larger pot so they have space to grow!

Another component to ensure that your plants live is potting pix. Plants need food too. But I’ll tell you a little secret. I once dug up a bunch of dirt from my backyard and stuffed it in an empty liter bottle of Coca-Cola to use to plant my succulents. And they thrived. We also compost though so that definitely changed the dirt quality. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Let me know if you have any other questions about taking care of your plants in the comments below! I’d love to talk.

P.S. I got this large arrangement of succulents for $5 on clearance. It was so cheap that the cashier thought I was lying and had put the clearance sticker on. She called management and the garden department before I was finally cleared to go home with these beauties…but that’s a story for another time.
